Severe weather, tornadoes possible across the Plains to end the week

All hazards will be possible, especially very large hail and damaging straight-line winds. Tornadoes will be possible but the exact threat is uncertain at this time.

An area of low pressure expected to develop by the end of the week could bring more severe weather, including possible tornadoes, to parts of the Plains.

The jet stream is currently situated across the northern United States. Areas of low pressure are currently riding along the stream, including in the Northeast, where a powerful late-season nor’easter has brought heavy, wet snow, rain and strong winds to the region.

As we get further into the week, the jet stream will dip to the south into the Rockies and parts of the Southwest.

When that occurs, an area of low pressure is expected to develop across the Rockies and the Plains, setting the stage for the possibility of severe weather.

There are still several days to keep an eye on the forecast, but as of Tuesday, it appears the highest threat of severe weather on Friday will be across parts of western Kansas, central and eastern Nebraska and southeastern South Dakota.

Severe storms will also be possible in the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles, Iowa, Minnesota and far eastern Colorado.
